Plastic pollution has emerged as a severe environmental crisis, with its effects permeating almost every aspect of our ecosystems. Among the most affected are marine species, particularly sea turtles, which have roamed our oceans for over 100 million years. These ancient creatures now face unprecedented threats from the growing prevalence of plastic waste in their habitats. While large-scale solutions are necessary, there is also tremendous power in individual actions. By making small, conscious changes in our daily routines, we can contribute to protecting sea turtles and reducing plastic pollution. This article delves into the impact of plastic on sea turtles and explores practical alternatives that can make a meaningful difference.

The Impact of Plastic on Sea Turtles

Sea turtles are emblematic of the detrimental effects of plastic pollution on marine life. Due to their feeding behaviour and migratory patterns, these creatures are particularly susceptible to ingesting plastic. Sea turtles often mistake floating plastic bags, balloons, and other debris for jellyfish, one of their primary food sources. Once ingested, plastic can cause blockages in their digestive systems, leading to malnutrition, internal injuries, and, in many cases, death. Research has shown that even small amounts of ingested plastic can be fatal, as the accumulation of debris over time can cause significant harm to the turtles’ health.

Beyond ingestion, sea turtles also face risks from entanglement in discarded fishing nets, plastic packaging, and other debris. This entanglement can restrict their movement, leading to physical injuries, drowning, or making them more vulnerable to predators. The presence of microplastics—tiny plastic particles that result from the breakdown of larger plastic items—further exacerbates the issue. Microplastics are virtually impossible to avoid in the ocean, affecting sea turtles from hatchlings to adults. These microplastics not only infiltrate their bodies but also contaminate the food chain, leading to broader ecological consequences.

Everyday Changes to Reduce Plastic Use

While the scope of plastic pollution might seem daunting, the cumulative effect of individual actions can lead to significant change. Here are some practical steps you can take to reduce plastic usage and help protect sea turtles:

Reusable Bags and Containers

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to reduce plastic waste is by using reusable bags and containers. Single-use plastic bags are among the most common items found in marine debris. By opting for a sturdy, reusable shopping bag, you eliminate the need for dozens, if not hundreds, of plastic bags each year. Similarly, replacing single-use plastic containers and water bottles with reusable alternatives can drastically reduce your plastic footprint. Stainless steel, glass, and BPA-free plastic containers are excellent options for storing food and beverages without generating waste.

Bamboo and Metal Alternatives

Replacing common plastic household items with bamboo or metal alternatives is another impactful way to reduce plastic consumption. For example, switching to a bamboo toothbrush can prevent around 12 plastic toothbrushes from ending up in the ocean every year. Metal straws, reusable cutlery, and even metal razors are other sustainable options that reduce the need for disposable plastic items. These materials are durable, recyclable, and, in the case of bamboo, biodegradable, ensuring that they won’t contribute to long-term environmental damage.

Conscious Consumer Choices

Consumer habits play a critical role in driving demand for plastic products. By making mindful decisions, you can help shift the market towards more sustainable practices. Start by choosing products with minimal or no plastic packaging. Many companies are now offering alternatives packaged in glass, metal, or cardboard. When shopping for groceries, bring your own produce bags and opt for loose items instead of pre-packaged ones. Additionally, supporting brands that prioritise sustainability can further drive change in the industry.

DIY Household Products

Homemade household products are an excellent way to avoid the plastic packaging associated with commercial goods. From cleaning solutions to personal care items like soap, shampoo, and deodorant, there are countless recipes online that use simple, natural ingredients. Not only do these DIY products reduce plastic waste, but they are also often free from harmful chemicals, making them better for your health and the environment.

Participating in Clean-Up Initiatives

In addition to reducing your own plastic use, participating in local clean-up initiatives can have a direct impact on the environment. Beach clean-ups, river clean-ups, and local litter-pick events are great opportunities to remove plastic waste from ecosystems before it reaches the ocean. These efforts, though seemingly small on an individual level, collectively contribute to the health of marine habitats. Moreover, participating in such events raises awareness and encourages others to take action against plastic pollution.

Educating and Advocating

Beyond personal actions, educating others about the impact of plastic pollution on sea turtles and advocating for larger systemic changes are crucial. Share information with friends, family, and your community about the importance of reducing plastic use. Support legislation that aims to reduce plastic production, increase recycling rates, and protect marine environments. By raising your voice, you contribute to a broader movement that seeks to address the root causes of plastic pollution.

Why Every Action Counts

The challenge of plastic pollution can often feel overwhelming, leading many to question the value of individual efforts. However, it’s important to remember that collective small actions can lead to significant change. For sea turtles, even a slight reduction in the amount of plastic entering the ocean can have life-saving consequences. Each piece of plastic you refuse, recycle, or remove from the environment is one less threat to these ancient mariners.

Moreover, individual actions have a ripple effect. By choosing to adopt plastic alternatives, you inspire others to do the same. This growing wave of awareness and action can drive larger systemic changes, influencing policy, business practices, and global attitudes towards plastic use.

In conclusion, while the fight against plastic pollution is a complex and ongoing battle, the power to make a difference lies in our hands. By making conscious choices to reduce plastic use, adopting sustainable alternatives, and advocating for broader change, we can help protect sea turtles and ensure that they continue to thrive in our oceans. Your small changes today can make a big difference tomorrow—not just for sea turtles, but for the entire planet.

Sea turtles have been navigating the world’s oceans for over 100 million years, surviving mass extinctions and dramatic shifts in the Earth’s climate. However, today, these ancient mariners face a new and insidious challenge: climate change. One of the most alarming consequences of global warming is its impact on sea turtle gender ratios, a factor that could jeopardise the survival of these species in the coming decades.

The Science Behind Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination

Unlike humans and many other animals, the sex of sea turtles is not determined by chromosomes but by the temperature at which the eggs incubate. This phenomenon, known as temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD), means that warmer temperatures generally produce female hatchlings, while cooler temperatures tend to result in males. The pivotal temperature, where the ratio between male and female offspring is balanced, typically hovers around 29°C (84.2°F).

As global temperatures rise due to human-induced climate change, the sands where sea turtles lay their eggs are heating up, leading to a higher proportion of female hatchlings. This shift in gender ratios has already been observed in various sea turtle populations around the world. For instance, studies have shown that in some rookeries, the proportion of female hatchlings now exceeds 90%, a drastic increase from historical levels.

The Long-Term Implications for Sea Turtle Populations

The skewed gender ratios have profound implications for the future of sea turtle populations. In the short term, a predominantly female population might lead to a temporary increase in the number of breeding females, which could boost population numbers. However, as the number of males continues to dwindle, the long-term prospects are dire. A lack of sufficient males could lead to reduced genetic diversity, inbreeding, and eventually, a population decline.

Moreover, sea turtles are already grappling with other threats, such as habitat loss, pollution, and poaching. The added pressure of an unbalanced sex ratio could tip the scales against their survival. Conservationists are concerned that without intervention, some sea turtle species may face an existential threat, potentially leading to extinction.

Mitigation Strategies and Future Outlook

Addressing the impact of climate change on sea turtle gender ratios requires both local and global efforts. On a local level, conservationists are exploring methods to cool nesting sites, such as shading nests or relocating them to cooler areas. These interventions can help ensure a more balanced sex ratio. Additionally, protecting nesting beaches from development and human interference remains a critical component of conservation efforts.

On a broader scale, mitigating climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions is crucial. International agreements like the Paris Accord aim to limit global temperature rise, which could help stabilise environmental conditions for sea turtles and countless other species.

To develop effective strategies, conservationists often need to rely on a broad range of information sources and expert reviews, similar to how one might seek out comprehensive reviews when choosing a reliable online platform, such as the detailed insights provided by websites reviewing casinos like https://play-fortune.ro/casino/play-fortuna/. Just as these reviews guide players in making informed decisions, thorough research and expert analysis help conservationists in crafting strategies to protect sea turtles against the unpredictable consequences of climate change.

The Role of Public Awareness and Community Involvement

Public awareness is another critical factor in sea turtle conservation. Many people are unaware of the profound impacts that climate change has on wildlife, particularly species like sea turtles that rely on specific environmental conditions for their survival. Educating communities, especially those living in coastal regions where turtles commonly nest, can have a significant positive impact on conservation efforts. When local communities are informed about the challenges that sea turtles face, they are more likely to support and participate in initiatives aimed at protecting these creatures.

Local involvement can take many forms, from volunteering in beach patrols that monitor nesting sites to participating in programs that protect eggs and hatchlings. Simple actions, such as reducing beachfront lighting during nesting season, can make a substantial difference in the survival rates of hatchlings, as artificial lights often disorient them, leading them away from the sea. Additionally, community-driven efforts to clean beaches and reduce plastic pollution directly benefit sea turtles, which are often victims of plastic ingestion and entanglement.

By fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility among coastal communities, conservationists can create a powerful network of advocates for sea turtles. These grassroots efforts are essential, as they provide a sustainable, long-term solution to the challenges posed by climate change. When local communities understand the importance of preserving nesting sites and actively participate in conservation, the chances of success increase dramatically. Moreover, these efforts often inspire broader environmental awareness and action, creating a ripple effect that benefits not only sea turtles but also other vulnerable species and ecosystems.

Moreover, just as players at https://play-fortune.ro/joaca/hot-target-slot/ aim for the perfect balance of risk and reward, conservation strategies must balance immediate actions with long-term sustainability. By combining scientific research with community engagement, there is hope that sea turtles can continue to thrive in a changing world.

Conclusion

The impact of climate change on sea turtle gender ratios presents a complex challenge, but it is not insurmountable. With targeted conservation efforts, increased public awareness, and global action on climate change, we can help ensure that these ancient creatures remain a vital part of our oceans for generations to come. The survival of sea turtles is not just a matter of preserving a species; it is a reflection of our commitment to protecting the planet’s biodiversity in the face of unprecedented environmental change.

Sea turtles are one of the oldest inhabitants of our planet. They have been around for over 100 million years and represent eternity and sustainability in the natural world. These majestic creatures play an important role in the ecosystem of the seas and oceans, and also inspire admiration among people for their unique beauty and behavior.

Variety of sea turtles

There are currently seven species of sea turtles, each with their own unique characteristics and adaptations. Here are some of them:

  1. Green turtle (Chelonia mydas). Green turtles get their name from the greenish color of their living algae. They are one of the largest sea turtles and are found in tropical and subtropical waters.
  2. Leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). Leatherback turtles are the largest of the sea turtles and can reach lengths of over 2 meters. Their main feature is a leathery shell instead of a hard shell.
  3. Caretta. These turtles are known for their large shells and red-brown coloring. They are distributed in various parts of the world’s oceans.
  4. Olive turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea). Olive turtles are the smallest of the sea turtles, typically measuring less than 2 feet in length. They are also known as “olive shells” because of the color of their shell.

Lifecycle and migrations

Sea turtles have an amazing life cycle that involves migrations of thousands of miles. The main stage of the life cycle of a sea turtle includes the following stages:

  1. Laying eggs. Females come ashore to lay their eggs in the sand. This process is called masonry.
  2. Hatching. Once the eggs are laid, they remain in the sand for several weeks or months, depending on the species. The offspring of sea turtles hatch and end up in the ocean.
  3. Young turtles. Young turtles spend the first years of their lives at sea, where they are exposed to many dangers, including predators and pollution.
  4. Sexual maturity. Sexual maturity occurs in turtles between the ages of 15 and 50 years, depending on the species. From this point on, they begin to return to shore to lay their eggs and complete the cycle.

Security and threats

Sea turtles are under constant threat due to a variety of factors:

  • Habitat loss. Coastal pollution and the construction of tourist facilities are leading to the destruction of coastal ecosystems where sea turtles lay their eggs. The destruction of breeding sites leaves young turtles without protection and food.
  • Digging for eggs. The uncontrolled harvesting of sea turtle eggs for sale on the black market is a serious threat. Efforts are underway in many countries to create protected nature reserves and patrol coastlines to prevent this practice.
  • Collision with ships. Sea turtles often encounter danger in the form of ships, especially in areas with heavy marine traffic. This can result in injury and death to turtles, as well as the destruction of ship propellers.
  • Climate change. Climate change is affecting sea turtle habitats, including changes in temperatures and sea levels. This can affect the survival and reproduction of turtles.
  • Losses in fishing. Sea turtles are accidentally caught in fishing nets and fishing rods, leading to their loss. Many countries are introducing new technologies and fishing regulations to reduce this threat.
  • Plastic Pollution. Sea turtles often confuse plastic waste with food and ingest it. This can lead to clogging of the digestive tract and death of the turtle. Fighting plastic pollution and educating public awareness are important to reduce this threat.

To protect sea turtles, many organizations and governments work together to develop and implement conservation strategies. These efforts include the creation of protected reserves, monitoring of turtle populations, public education campaigns and strict fishing regulations.

Such measures help reduce pressure on sea turtles and provide them with a safer future. However, the conservation of these precious species requires constant attention and participation from the entire global community.

Conclusion

Sea turtles are unique and colorful creatures that play an important role in ocean ecosystems. Their conservation and protection is a priority for maintaining biodiversity and the health of our seas and oceans. It is important to continue to study and learn about sea turtles to ensure they have a safe future for our planet.

Marine fish play a key role in ocean ecosystems, providing food for many animal and human species and having important impacts on the health of the world’s seas and oceans. In addition, marine fish continue to attract the attention of aquarists and aquarium enthusiasts due to their beauty, diversity and unique characteristics. In this article we will look at the biology and diversity of marine fish, and also share the experience of the owner of marine aquariums.

Introduction

Marine fish are a group of living organisms adapted to life in the salt water of oceans and seas. They are one of the most diverse groups of animals in the seas and oceans, and their adaptability allows them to live in a wide variety of ecosystems, ranging from coral reefs and coastal zones to deep sea cracks and the cold waters of Antarctica.

Biology of marine fish

Anatomy and physiology. Marine fish have anatomy and physiology adapted to life in an aquatic environment. Their body is usually designed to facilitate movement in the water: it is narrow and slender, with fins that help them maneuver and swim. Most species of marine fish have gills that allow them to extract oxygen from the water.

Reproduction and development. Many species of marine fish have different reproductive strategies, including eggs, larvae, and adults. Some fish migrate long distances to find spawning grounds, while others stay in the same region.

Variety of sea fish

The world’s oceans are home to more than 30,000 species of marine fish. This enormous diversity includes fish of different sizes, shapes, colors and behavioral characteristics. It is important to note that marine fish can be both predators and herbivores, and also perform various functions in ecosystems, including the role of filter feeders, maintaining the balance of prey populations, etc.

The importance of marine fish for ecosystems

Marine fish play a critical role in maintaining the ecosystem balances of the oceans and seas. Here are some of their important features:

Regulation of populations. Predatory marine fish control populations of small fish and organisms, which helps prevent overpopulation and imbalance in ecosystems.

Food chain. Many species of marine fish provide food for other animals, including seabirds, mammals and humans. They are an important link in the marine food chain.

Participation in biogeochemical processes. Marine fish also contribute to the biogeochemical processes of the oceans by influencing nutrient cycling and water chemistry.

Breeding marine fish in aquariums

Breeding marine fish in home aquariums is becoming increasingly popular. However, this requires special approach and knowledge, since marine fish are often more sensitive to changes in water and conditions compared to freshwater fish.

Selecting suitable species
When choosing marine fish for breeding in an aquarium, it is important to consider their adaptation to planktonic feeding or to fish that require live prey. Popular species that are often bred in saltwater aquariums include firefish, clonfish, angelfish, and others.

Providing suitable conditions
Saltwater aquariums require precise control of temperature, pH levels, salinity and water quality. Water filtration and circulation are also important to keep fish healthy. High quality water and proper nutrition will help ensure successful breeding and healthy offspring.

Development of personal experience
Raising marine fish in aquariums is a fun and educational activity that can be fun and enjoyable. However, like any hobby, it takes time, patience and training. It is good practice to exchange experiences with other aquarists and visit local clubs and forums to discuss methods of breeding and caring for saltwater fish.

Marine aquarium owner experience

To better understand what it’s like to own marine aquariums and raise fish in them, we spoke with experienced aquarist and founder of the IT project miconv.com, Mia Bruno.

Mia Bruno: “I have been involved in marine aquariums for many years and it has always been a fun hobby for me. The most important thing when breeding saltwater fish is to create a stable environment in the aquarium. I pay special attention to water quality and filtration systems. It is also important to choose fish that are which are well compatible with each other and with the conditions in the aquarium.

The marine fish in my aquarium not only bring me joy to watch, but also teach me patience and responsibility. I am always ready to learn new things and improve conditions for my students. It’s a fun and inspiring hobby that I recommend to anyone interested in marine life.”

Conclusion

Marine fish are amazing creatures that bring joy and fascination to those who decide to breed them in home aquariums. However, this requires special attention to detail, training and control of containment conditions. Learning and sharing experiences with other aquarists can help you succeed in this exciting hobby.

Denmark has numerous unique and weird traditions that set it different from other countries. It is one of the Nordic countries, and its rules and habits date back to ancient times. History shows that the first Danes were fishermen and hunters suspected to have entered the country from Southern and Eastern Europe.

Modern-day Denmark shares several leisure activities with other nations. However, there are some traditions/ vices that you will only find in this country. The following are some of the vices that you will only find in Denmark:

Tom’s Giant Chocolate Turtle

One of the amusing habits of the Danes is their crazy love for chocolate and candies. According to a report, each Dane consumes an average of 12.3 kilos of chocolate and candy per year, making them the highest candy eaters in the world. In addition, each Dane drinks an average of 87 litres of soda annually. Consequently, the country has one of the world’s highest rates of overweight and diabetic people.

In 1948, tropical leatherback sea turtles appeared on the shores of North Zealand in Denmark. The turtles became a subject of discussion all over the country, leading to the first Toms Skildpadde inspired by these turtles. Tom Skildpadde changed to big and better Kaempe Skildpadde in 1967, featuring a massive size with delicious toffee filling.

Tom Giant Chocolate Turtle is a national treasure recognized by 98% of Danish people. It is the most-sold chocolate in the country, with 41 million Toms Skildpadder pieces sold every year.

Gambling

Denmark is known for its liberal laws when it comes to gambling. All that you need in this country is a license and you will be ready to open either a land-based or an online casino. Danish people enjoy various forms of gambling such as lotteries, betting on dog and horse racing, slot machines, and online casinos.

Online casinos are taking over due to their convenience and ease of use. Danske Spil, a state-owned casino has been the monopoly for many years. However, things have changed and people can now enjoy gaming from other sites. Customer protection has always been a concern and that is why smart players always look for reputable casino uden nemid och Rofus and enjoy the benefits that come with such sites.

The Hygge Concept

Danish people have high regard for togetherness, which led to the idea of hygge which refers to spending time together without any particular plan. The word hygge was coined in 1800s but still remains applicable in the modern Danish world. The concept involves spending informal time with friends or family. Ideally, it can take place in a home setting or even away in a quiet place. Danish people can share a beer, wine or even hot chocolate as they relax. You will find people discussing deep issues in life or celebrating small joys of life during such meetings.

Drinking Habits

Danes enjoy having a good beer and most of their celebrations involve beer. According to the EU report,
40% of Danish adults drink beer with bars full of revellers on the weekend across the country. Like other Scandinavian countries, Danish people also smoke a lot.

Bicycle Culture

Most countries are now adopting cycling as a leisure activity and to keep fit. If you love cycling, Denmark is definitely the right country for you due to their strong cycling culture. Copenhagen, the country’s capital city, is known as the city of bikes. Bikes are essential for the Danish people for exercise and as a means of transport. You will find well-maintained cycling tracks, thus no need to worry about your safety.

Danes Love Carrots

Just like bikes, carrots are everywhere in Denmark. Danes eat raw, shredded, marinated, sliced, or diced carrots. You will find them eating carrots anywhere, any time.

Conclusion

Above are some things you will likely find in Denmark when interacting with the citizens. You can try some of these things while enjoying this beautiful country. If you love surprises and want to explore new things, you will enjoy your stay there. However, if you are rigid, don’t be surprised or feel out of place when you experience some of the things listed above.

Biologists found pieces of plastic in the digestive tracts of baby sea turtles of four species. The amount of plastic found was up to 0.9 percent of the animals’ weight. Scientists believe that young turtles are most at risk because they move farther from shore to avoid predators, but bump into accumulations of floating debris. The study was published in Frontiers in Marine Science.

Baby sea turtles, through evolution, have adapted to swim out into the open ocean to avoid predators in coastal waters, while adults, by contrast, return closer to shore. Also, young turtles are not selective about food and devour anything they find edible. Scientists recently realized that the smell of plastic debris, on which microorganisms and algae grow, attracts sea turtles and they absorb pieces of plastic. These behavioral traits make young ones especially vulnerable as they stumble upon clumps of plastic in the ocean waters and swallow bits of it. The plastic damages the turtles’ digestive tract, and this poses a threat to their lives.

A team of Australian and British biologists led by Brendan J. Godley of the University of Exeter decided to look at how often baby turtles of different species ingest plastic. The researchers spent 28 years studying dead turtles nailed to the shore or caught in nets from the Pacific and Indian Oceans. A total of 58 green turtles (Chelonia mydas), 21 tadpole turtles (Caretta caretta), 28 flatback turtles (Natator depressus), 7 bisons (Eretmochelys imbricata) and 7 olive ridley turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) were included in the work. The contents of the digestive tract were analyzed in all the animals.

The scientists found that all turtle species, except the bissus, ingested plastic. Animals caught in the Pacific Ocean captured more plastic: 83 percent of green turtles, 86 percent of tadpoles, 80 percent of flatback turtles, and 29 percent of olive ridley turtles. Plastic was also found in turtles from the Indian Ocean, but fewer animals swallowed it: 28 percent of flatback turtles, 21 percent of tadpoles, and 9 percent of green turtles. One green turtle from the Pacific Ocean found 144 pieces of plastic larger than 1 millimeter. In all, the amount of plastic found in the turtles was up to 0.9 percent of their total mass.

It is impossible to know for sure if the sea turtles died from ingesting plastic or from other unrelated causes. Regardless, the extent to which plastic has been found in the digestive tract of sea turtles suggests that more research is needed to assess the effect of ocean pollution on sea turtle populations.

It’s not just turtles that see bits of plastic contaminated with bacteria as food. British biologists have found that microplastics coated with bacteria biofilms are much more readily absorbed by oysters than pure particles.

A new marine protected area is being created near Ascension Island in the South Atlantic Ocean, an area twice as large as the area…

Full protection of 443,000 square kilometers of ocean around the British Overseas Territories will protect green turtles, swordfish, sharks, tuna and marlin, as well as frigates and terns.

Lewis Pugh, “patron” of the oceans at UNO-Environment welcomed this development: “I am extremely pleased to hear that Britain has heeded our call for full protection of the waters near Ascension Island, the jewel of the Atlantic Ocean. Protecting 30% of the world’s oceans should not remain just a dream.” Right now, marine protected areas cover only 7.6% of the world’s oceans.

Pugh visited Ascension Island as a boy and says he’ll never forget watching sharks circling his boat, green turtles laying eggs, and abundant wildlife.

“Ascension Island is a rare case of saving extraordinary abundance in the midst of a sea of decline,” he says, thanking the Blue Marine Foundation, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the Great British Oceans Coalition, non-governmental organizations, scientists, civil servants and politicians for taking this step.

Conservationists also welcomed the UK Government’s support for the designation of the waters of this remote island as a Marine Protected Area.

Philip Hammond, Britain’s chancellor, used his spring statement to announce the government’s support for the Ascension Island Council’s call to designate the island’s waters as a marine protected area in which fishing is prohibited.

The move is part of the state’s Blue Belt program to protect millions of square kilometers of oceans in its overseas territories. Michael Gove, Secretary of the Environment said, “With maritime holdings that stretch across the globe, Britain is uniquely positioned to lead the way in protecting the world’s oceans and the precious fauna and flora of the seas.

“Today’s progress toward full protection of all waters near Ascension Island is an important step in expanding our Blue Belt program and protecting one-third of the world’s oceans through 2030. I hope states from around the world will follow suit.”

Marine protected areas are an important tool for conserving the biodiversity of the world’s oceans.

“Ambitious interventions to protect marine and coastal ecosystems, like the one undertaken on Ascension Island, are extremely useful,” says Ole Westergaard, marine specialist at the United Nations Environment Programme, “not only for the unique underwater biodiversity whose habitat they are, but also to protect their valuable contribution to keeping oceans healthy and functioning, supporting food security and resilience-an essentially cost-effective, natural solution to climate change.”

Scientists have discovered that sea turtles consume plastic debris not because of its visual resemblance to their prey, but because of its edible odor. The discovery sheds light on why many sea creatures die.

“Often there are turtles with completely or partially blocked digestive systems because they ate the plastic debris. There is also a growing number of sea turtles that have become ill and ended up ashore because they ate plastic,” Dr. Kenneth J. Lohmann, one of the study’s authors, told the British newspaper Metro.

The scientist added that the concentration of plastics in certain areas of the world’s oceans may cause turtles and other sea creatures to perceive these places as stable food sources. According to Kenneth J. Lohmann, if that happens, it will be too late to save marine biodiversity. “The best thing we can do is to keep plastic out of the ocean altogether,” the scientist concluded.
